Playing sports is a great way to exercise both body and mind. However, it can be hard on the eyes if you do not take the time to protect them. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, there are about 30,000 eye injuries from sports in America every year. At Andrew Stone Optometry, we can ensure your eyes are well protected and help treat eye issues caused by sports-related injuries. Here are some sports eye safety tips we recommend to our patients in Columbia and surrounding areas.
Wear Eye Protection
This might seem like a no-brainer, but many people participating in sports where small objects don’t realize the importance of wearing eye protection. We can assess what level of eye protection you may need for your sport at your next consultation. We often recommend an effective pair of safety goggles listed as ASTM F803.
Glasses Are Not Eye Protection
Keep in mind that the average pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses are not strong enough to protect your eyes from the impact of a ball or other small object. You need to wear safety goggles over your regular glasses. Contacts also do not provide any kind of eye protection.
Use Face Shields
Children are especially prone to eye injuries while playing baseball. We recommend that children wear polycarbonate face shields that can attach to helmets. Face shields approved by the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association should also be worn by children while playing hockey.
Maintain an Annual Eye Exam
Athletes depend on their vision for optimal performance during sporting activities. That’s why it’s essential to ensure your eye health is properly managed through routine eye exams. We also check for signs of any potential health issues like glaucoma or cataracts.
